  Director of Youth Ministries Email
Benton Berghuis

Ben is a lifelong PK (preacher’s kid), and his father currently serves as pastor to Columbia Furnace and Union Forge UMC. He graduated from the College of William and Mary with concentrations in Philosophy and Religious Studies. It has been said of Ben that he lives and breathes religious studies. While at college, he had the opportunity get involved with a cornucopia of religious persuasions. Ben founded a group that studied theological writings of Pope John Paul II. He also went on a pilgrimage to Israel/Palestine with the Wesley Foundation. He participated weekly in a small group Bible study with Intervarsity. He attended Wednesday Mass, Friday Shabbat services, and Sunday SNP’s (a Wesley Foundation Sunday service and dinner) … and the list goes on. He also counts himself fortunate to have had the opportunity to work as an assistant to Professor David L. Holmes, the Walter G. Mason Professor of Religious Studies. Professor Holmes published The Faiths of the Founding Fathers and recently put out a book on the religions of the post-World War II presidents, The Faiths of the Postwar Presidents: From Truman to Obama (George H. Shriver Lecture Series in Religion in American History).

Ben has been a die hard for youth ministry ever since he helped to found his first youth group at one of his father’s early Virginia appointments. Since then he has gone from active participant to helper and leader for his home church First UMC Winchester. There he had the opportunity to lead Bible studies, mission trips, and retreats. In addition, he is currently on the District council that deals with youth activities and has been a Conference youth and young adult delegate for 9 years. Ben hopes to use his experience to lead the youth of Tom’s Brook UMC to great works in Christ!

Director of Children's Ministry Email
Donna Hughes

Donna Hughes is the oldest of four children born on a farm in Alexandria, Virginia and moved to the Shenandoah Valley when she was 13. She loved the Valley immediately and took the "traveler's psalm" (Psalm 121) as her life verse. It is a beautiful expression of God being sought..."I look to the hills, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Maker of Heaven and Earth." She graduated from Broadway High School and followed her dream of becoming a librarian. She is employed at Handley Regional Library with an office at the Bowman Library in Stephens City. She graduated from Longwood University with degrees in working with children and libraries. She continued her schooling at University of NC where she happily says she is a "Tarheel."

She likes to read, gather and tell stories, sing, play the piano and listen to her fiancée play the organ, bird watch and garden, tell jokes (ask her for a knock-knock), hang out with friends, travel and worship God.

She is engaged to be married to Mike Edington.

During three of those years, she was employed by Radiology Associates of Richmond as a General Radiographer.

After moving to Winchester, she worked at WMC. Later on, her travels took her back to Shenandoah County where she was employed as a Mammographer at SMH. As the Lead Mammographer for the Imaging Department, she worked in Quality Assurance and updated records to be presented to the FDA in compliance with the Mammography Quality Standards Act.

Brenda also worked as an Administrative Assistant in the Danville Crisis Pregnancy Center.

Rev. Bob Throckmorton

Bob and his beloved wife, Patti, come to Toms Brook from Sunset Drive UMC, in Broadway, Va. Bob earned a B.S. in Religious Studies at Randolph Macon College, in Ashland, Va. (1977), and a Doctorate in Ministry at Union Theological Seminary, in Richmond, Va. (1981). He was ordained an Elder in the Virginia Conference in 1982. He has served churches in Stuarts Draft, Nelson County, Goochland County, Williamsburg, Richmond, and Winchester. Bob has served on the Conference Council of Youth Ministry, the Conference Council on Ministries, the United Nations Seminar, the board of Abba Pregnancy Care Center in Winchester, the board of the Wesley Foundation at JMU (now named “RISE”), and the boards of Shenandoah Valley Emmaus and Chrysalis communities.

Bob and Patti met during their college years and were married in 1976. Patti is a Special Education teacher and has been at Sherando High School (Stephens City) for the past 14 years, where she is highly effective and well respected. They have three boys: Aaron (30), who is married and has a son; Ryan (26), who is a doctoral student at Virginia Tech; and Joshua (22), who lives and works in Harrisonburg. Bob says that the boys were fortunate in that they received their height from him and their good looks from their mother!

Bob loves to teach and preach and occasionally will bring a sermon to life as a biblical character. He plays his 12-string guitar, reads, works in the yard, or stretches out with his dog (Bane) to relax. He hopes to find in Toms Brook a community prepared for mission and hungry to grow spiritually.
